about

Recently, a self-indulgent trend has emerged in music: aging hipsters revisiting their defunct bands to re-release old records or record new ones -- as if somehow the project no one cared about before will find new life the second time around. For members of Gen X and Y facing their 40s, it's become the equivalent of Boomers buying a sports car -- a midlife crisis in the most obvious of iterations.

But being self-indulgent has always been one of my calling cards, so let me not only join in on the trend, but also do it in the most self-indulgent and annoying way possible.

'Demonstrations & Actualizations' looks at the history of the band I fronted -- World Blanket -- by offering two versions of some of my favorite songs from our catalog.

The first recording is a demo -- often times, the very first nugget of an idea, typically in the middle of the writing process. You can hear a song developing, obvious mistakes, the germination of a melody, and, occasionally, a beautiful moment that was otherwise never recaptured.

The second version is the final studio recording: an idea actualized and released into the ether in its enduring form.

Whether anyone else will be interested in hearing the spark that ignited songs that never made any impact on the world anyway is unlikely, but for me, the story of World Blanket is encapsulated in this dichotomy: the dream and the reality. And significantly, it's a fitting analogy for all of us aging hipsters who dreamed so much only to realize we still wish our music could do more.
